Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley celebrated National Rebuilding Day Saturday, as one of 200 affiliates nationwide that joined forces to preserve affordable housing and stabilize neighborhoods by providing free home repairs and modifications for low-income families. Locally, 975 volunteers repaired 38 houses within Santa Clara County. One of the homes transformed belonged to life-long South Bay resident Virginia Benche, who has lived in her Morgan Hill home for 20 years. Benche has been wheelchair bound for several years and has had difficulty functioning in her mobile home which was not designed for someone with disabilities. With a team of seven volunteers from New Creation Lutheran Church lead by retired electrician Rick Voss, the team was able to retrofit the kitchen to be easier to access in a wheel chair, improve lighting, raise outlets and installed smoke detectors. “It’s like heaven,” Benche said. “You don’t know how much these little repairs will make my day to day life easier.”
