Gilroy – After overcoming a 16-point deficit, the Gavilan men’s basketball team ran out of time last Thursday and fell in the third place game in the Chabot tournament to Spokane, 69-63.

Head coach Chris Shoemaker said his team got out to a slow start and was trailing at the half, 49-33.

But after the intermission, the Rams began to battle back against the team from Washington state and made a game of it. With 1:30 left in the game, the Rams tied the game at 63 all.

“We just clawed our way back,” Shoemaker said. “But then we had a couple of games go against us.”

The defense, which was lethargic to open the game, stepped up and held Spokane to just 20 points. But despite a 30-point effort in the second half by the Rams, it wasn’t enough to steal one.

“That is how our season has gone,” said assistant coach Mike Baumgartner. “We go by what our defense does.”

Gavilan was forced to foul down the stretch and Spokane sank their shots from the charity stripe, killing any further hopes from the Rams.

Leading the way for Gavilan were John Morrison and Adrian Zamora who each had 17 points. Nipping on their heels was Curtis Lilly with 12.
