Morgan Hill – At times, the Toyota Celica reached 40mph above the posted speed limit as the Morgan Hill man tried to flee from police, speeding away from an address at West Main Avenue and Del Monte Avenue.

The driver was later arrested when he reached a dead end on Del Monte Avenue.

Guillermo Hernandez, 32, was booked into Santa Clara County Jail for alleged felony evading a police officer and driving without a license.

According to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing, the incident began Sunday morning at approximately 11:20am. Officers responded to a call of a disturbance or possible fight in the area, and when they arrived, Hernandez, who was in the Toyota, sped away. Morgan Hill police officer Kyle Christensen followed, Swing said.

Hernandez sped northbound on Monterey Road, Swing added, traveling at approximately 50mph in a 25mph zone. As Christensen attempted to pull him over, Hernandez swerved into the oncoming traffic, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes. He then turned on to Central Avenue and headed north again, turning onto Del Monte Avenue. He flew through the stop sign at the intersection without stopping, Swing said.

Christensen continued in pursuit as Hernandez pushed the Honda up to 65mph in a 25mph zone. He sped through another stop sign at the intersection of Del Monte Avenue and Wright Avenue, continuing north, the Honda becoming airborne as it crested the hill.

When Hernandez reached the dead end at Del Monte Avenue and Christine Lynn Drive, Swing said, he left the Toyota and attempted to flee on foot, but Christensen was right behind him.

Hernandez was booked into jail without incident, and no one was injured during the pursuit.

Hernandez was alone in the vehicle during the pursuit.

Swing said it is not clear why Hernandez fled, as he had no outstanding warrants and apparently no drugs, paraphernalia or weapons on him.

“This could have been very bad, because of the speeds and the area of the pursuit,” Swing said. “There were some children out in the area when this happened. Also, at Del Monte and Wright, there is a church, and on a Sunday, there were a lot of people around. There were a lot of people out and about during that time. We were very fortunate that there were no injuries or collisions.”
