Upcoming public meetings regarding the future extension of Santa Teresa Boulevard along the west side of Morgan Hill will allow affected residents to voice their concerns about the details and timing of the project, city staff said.

Construction on the new roadway segment beginning at West Main Avenue, crossing West Dunne Avenue and ending at DeWitt Avenue, near Spring Avenue, is scheduled to begin by early 2012, and perhaps as soon as late 2011, according to city staff.

The RDA-funded project will cost about $17.6 million, including the costs of property acquisition, consultants and construction. The new roadway is part of the city’s Capital Improvement Program approved as part of the 2010-2011 city budget in June.

The new road will be a “two-lane multi-modal corridor,” according to city budget documents, and will feature sidewalks, bike lanes and street lights.

The project was delayed while city staff and consultants produced an updated citywide circulation element as part of its general plan earlier this year. In February, the city council adopted the new circulation element, which concluded that the new Santa Teresa extension needed only to be two lanes (one lane in each direction), rather than four as previously planned.

More background on the project, alignment concepts and preliminary designs will be presented, and comments and feedback accepted, at a public meeting 7 p.m. Thursday, in the Hiram Morgan Hill room of the Community and Cultural Center, 17000 Monterey Road. A follow-up meeting is planned for Dec. 9.
