The Sobrato girls tennis team finished the year in second place after losing the second time around to league champ Westmont, 6-1.
Emily Ankiel defeated her opponent in straight sets giving the Bulldogs their only victory.
Ankiel will finish the season undefeated without dropping a set out of 14 matches. Each of the other three single matches went to three sets, but Westmont was not going to be denied.
The doubles matches were defaulted because five players were in SAT prep classes and Westmont was not able to accommodate a revised play date.
October 11th was the first round of Santa Teresa singles and doubles play. Ankiel was the No. 1 seeded singles player. She had a bye in the first round.
She defeated her quarter final opponent 6-1,6-0.
Ankiel was the only player to qualify for the semifinals scheduled 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Pleasant High.
There, she will meet Westmont’s No. 2 single player. The No. 1 Westmont player — the second seed in this tournament — is in the other half of the draw.
A semifinal victory guarantees her admission into the Blossom Valley Athletic League singles tournament at 1 p.m. Leland High November 6.
A victory in the semi’s, will probably put Ankiel against Westmont’s No. 1 for the division championship match. Â
