SPORTS SHORTS: LOHS, SHS taking part in Dig Pink girls volleyball event Saturday

Bulldogs (3-0) place first in Lincoln Tournament
MORGAN HILL — The Lincoln Tournament was held last weekend at Sobrato High School, and the SHS boys water polo team delighted the home crowd.

The Bulldogs strolled to a first-place finish out of eight teams, winning its first three games of the season by lopsided scores. Sobrato opened with a 14-7 victory Friday over Santa Teresa, then beat Silver Creek 19-3 Saturday morning and Burlingame 13-8 in the championship game Saturday afternoon.

Burlingame is a perennial playoff contender.

“It’s a little early to tell how we’ll do this year, but it’s definitely a good start,” SHS coach Dave Letts said.

On the girls side of the tournament, Sobrato was eliminated after two games, falling 23-2 to Gunn on Friday and 7-5 to Santa Teresa.

FIELD HOCKEY

Danielle Horning and Anisha Patel tallied their first goals of the season, and Kirsten Doting scored as well Thursday to help Live Oak beat Branham 3-2 in nonleague play.

Horning also joined Marisa Faust and Michaela Swenson with assists for the Acorns, who are 2-1 heading into a big test Tuesday at St. Francis. That game begins at 3:30 p.m.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Live Oak began the season with a quality victory Thursday, beating Milpitas in three sets on the road.

Final statistics were unavailable, but the Acorns received 17 digs by junior libero Allie Unger and were carried offensively with a big night by hitters Gabi Cinkova and Fa Saulala.

Junior blocker Allison Shedden had a strong night at net.

“I think we all played really well. It was a good way to start,” Live Oak coach Laura Coleman said Monday. “The one thing we really need to improve is our serves; we had as many aces as errors.”

The Acorns play their home opener at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday against Los Altos, another large-school playoff contender.

The Sobrato Bulldogs lasted five games against their former Mount Hamilton Division foe, Evergreen Valley, but lost 25-18, 16-25, 25-23, 13-25, 6-15 Thursday in San Jose.

Led by Kayla McElvy’s team-high eight kills, the Bulldogs (0-3) looked strong again versus A-league competition but are still looking for their first win.

GIRLS TENNIS

After an even finish in singles, Evergreen Valley went 2 for 3 in doubles matches Thursday to hand Sobrato it’s first loss, 4-3, in Mount Hamilton play.

For the Bulldogs, Ali Pecsok defeated Vivian Dao 6-0, 6-4, Emerald Nguyen outlasted Minh Nguyen 6-2, 1-6, 10-7, and Amy Morimoto and Mica Schenkelberg beat Monica Luong and Kristine Le 6-4, 4-6, 10-7.
