Driving under the influence of alcohol

v A suspected drunken driver caused a major accident Dec. 7 on Highway 101 north of Cochrane Road, causing traffic problems and sending one woman and himself to the hospital.

Jesus C. Perez, 22, of Milwaukee, Wisc., was driving an Acura Legend allegedly under the influence at 8:52pm Tuesday northbound on the highway at a high rate of speed when he came upon Manuel Torres, 63, of Lakeport in a Ford Ranger driving at approximately 65 mph. Perez crashed into the rear of the Ranger, lost control of the Acura and spun into the center divide. The Acura came to rest facing sideways in the number one lane. The Ranger pulled off the shoulder of the highway.

Thomas R. Dunham, 50, of San Martin, was traveling northbound at approximately 70 mph in a Volkswagen Toyareg when he came quickly up to the Acura, swerved to avoid it but struck the right front with the left front of his Volkswagen. He was able to pull off the shoulder in front of the Ranger. Michelle R. McCarthy, 42, of San Jose, was also northbound at approximately 65 mph in a Dodge Caravan and also tried to avoid Perez’s vehicle, but struck the right front with the left front of her minivan. The Caravan spun into the number three lane; the Acura once again hit the center divide.

McCarthy was taken to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose with a fractured hip. She and Torres and Dunham were wearing seatbelts. Perez was not restrained and was taken to Stanford Medical Center with major head injuries. He was charged with driving under the influence.
