Police will vigorously enforce the hands-free cell phone law on the roads today and tomorrow, as part of Santa Clara County’s “zero tolerance” campaign against driving while talking or texting on a handheld communication device.
Morgan Hill police, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, California Highway Patrol and other law enforcement agencies throughout the county will participate in the enforcement blitz today and Tuesday.
In California, driving while talking on a handheld phone is illegal. In August 2009, the CHP and sheriff’s office joined forces for a zero-tolerance campaign, designed to strictly enforce drivers violating the law, while at the same time educating drivers about the consequences of distracted driving, according to a press release from the CHP.
The campaign, which originated in the Bay Area with participation from Santa Clara County law enforcement agencies, became a statewide crackdown.
