So far during this holiday season’s police crackdown on drunk and impaired driving, law enforcement agencies throughout the county have arrested 141 people on suspicion of DUI, according to a press release from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.

These arrests were made from Dec. 18 to Dec. 27, police said. This period marks the beginning of the sheriff’s and other police agencies’ annual winter holiday “Avoid the 13” enforcement effort. The campaign uses grant funds to place extra officers on the road during high-traffic times, and conduct DUI checkpoints and other enforcement activities.

Over the next several days, “saturation patrols” will be conducted in the city of Gilroy, throughout unincorporated Santa Clara County, and the cities of Los Altos and Campbell, according to the press release.

Funding for the Avoid the 13 program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
