As a user of the Morgan Hill Library, part of the Santa Clara County Library system, you not only have access to books and other materials in our own library, but also at the eight other county libraries.

That means that if we don’t have the item you’re looking for in Morgan Hill, we can get it for you from any of our other libraries, including Alum Rock, Campbell, Cupertino, Gilroy, Los Altos, Milpitas, Saratoga, and even the Bookmobile. This process of obtaining an item from one of our other libraries is called placing an item on hold. When an item is on hold, is it delivered from another library right to the library here in Morgan Hill.

You can place an item on hold yourself by using our web site at http://www.santaclaracountylib.org/ Simply find the item you want in our library catalog and click on the “Request Item” button. The web site will then ask you for your library card number and PIN. If you don’t yet have a PIN (personal identification number), make sure to get one at the check-out desk next time you’re in the library.

You can also place an item on hold by calling our reference desk during any of the hours the library is open. Or, next time you visit the library, drop by either the Adult or Children’s reference desk and we would be happy to place an item on hold for you.

The next time you’re in the library, you’ll notice a change in how you pick up your holds. Previously, you had to wait in line at the front check-out desk to get your requested items. This month, we put all your hold items out in the library so you can help yourself. This means that instead of waiting in line at the check-out desk, you can simply pick up your item yourself, and then check it out yourself at our automated checkout machine. Other libraries have implemented this new service and patrons really like it so far.

To take advantage of this new service, you will need to bring your library card with you, since the hold items will be arranged on the shelf by the first letter of your last name and the last four digits of your library card. This ensures your privacy.

If you have any questions about holds, you can drop by our check-out desk next time you’re in the library, or call us at (408) 779-3196. The library is open Monday and Tuesday from 1-9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Questions and suggested topics for At the Library, which appears in Tuesday editions, should be directed to Nancy Howe, community librarian, at nh***@**********************ca.us or by calling 779-3196. This week’s column was written by Rosanne Macek. The Morgan Hill Library, located at the corner of Peak and West Main avenues next to City Hall, is open every day but Sunday.
