There is a growing movement in this country to protect our Bill of Rights which is our best guarantee of liberty in our country.
This is the movement against the Patriot Act (so-called) which was initiated by President Bush and passed by Congress immediately after the 9/11 disaster. Any congressperson that voted against “patriotism” was fearful for their career at that precipitious moment.
The Patriot Act is not about patriotism. It is about the curtailing of our civil liberties to an extreme seldom experienced in our 250-year history. At this time three states – Alaska, Hawaii and Vermont – have passed resolutions against the act and 173 cities and counties have followed suit.
Morgan Hill is lagging behind most of the cities in Santa Clara County in not addressing this timely issue. Organizations as diverse as the National Rifle Association, the Center for Constitutional Rights, the ACLU, the American Library Association and the Baptist Joint Commitee for Public Affairs have taken a stand against the Patriot Act. I am going to present a proposal for a resolution to the City Council in the near future. Anyone who would like to get more information on the Patriot Act and the resolution that was recently passed by the City of Los Gatos (an inspiring document in my opinion) can contact me at 779-0745. Leave a message and I will get back to you.
