Brandi Chastain, the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and World Cup Champion, who made the winning penalty kick in the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, kicked off the fitness program Friday morning.

Chastain played games from around the world with 300 third-to-fifth graders. Ronald McDonald, “chief happiness officer,” was also on hand for the fun and lead the children in warm-up exercises.

Barrett Elementary is one of 48 schools where McDonald’s Corp. is hosting a Passport to Play Day as part of a national tour. Since 2005, the curriculum has been accepted in 38,000 schools reaching more than 7 million school children and resulting in 16 million hours of active play.

The program’s goal is to underscore the importance of children’s balanced, active lifestyles. The program was developed in partnership with the U.S. Olympic Committee and the National Association of Sports and Physical Educators and it’s sponsored by local neighborhood McDonald’s owner operators.
