SAN MARTIN – A three car-accident Sunday on Santa Teresa Boulevard and Fitzgerald Road killed one person and sent two others to the hospital.
The accident occurred at 6:30 p.m. when a 16-year-old male from San Jose made an unsafe maneuver in a 1998 Mazda pickup while traveling south on Santa Teresa Boulevard, the CHP said.
The driver, who was not fully identified, of a Chevy Astrovan unsuccessfully swerved to avoid the collision.
The Astrovan flipped over and the Mazda continued out of control and hit a 1999 Nissan Quest van, driven by a 35-year-old Gilroy resident, who also was not fully identified.
Hannah Thuc Tsan, 35, of Gilroy, a passenger in the Quest, died at the scene. The driver of the Quest suffered major injuries and the driver of the Mazda suffered moderate injuries. The two drivers were taken to San Jose Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Astrovan received minor injuries and was treated at the scene.
The accident remains under investigation.
Fatalities around the state have been down, this holiday weekend compared to last year. As of Sunday, the CHP reports that only 15 fatalities have been reported compared to 27 at the same time last year. Overall, last year 45 people died and 944 were arrested for drunken driving.
