The weather may not be cooperating tonight as parents line up at Nordstrom Elementary School for kindergarten registration.
Drizzly, wet weather greeted the first parents who began arriving at 3 p.m. today to stake out their spots in line to make sure they sign their child up for kindergarten. Registration will open at 8 a.m. Wednesday.
Nordstrom Principal Barbara Neal said she thinks there will be enough room for everyone, judging by the registration packets that have already been picked up.
“I don’t think it’s necessary,” said Neal Tuesday afternoon of the camped-out parents. “It’s become a sort of social event.”
She said the camping out has been going on since Morgan Hill Unified School District switched registration from the district office, to individual schools several sites years ago. Parents bring out their lawn chairs, sleeping bags and even tents to the camp out. Neal said she has never seen children spending the full night however, just the parents.
Neal however, will return later in the evening with warm coffee and tomorrow morning with treats for the hopeful campers. Last year, everyone who lined up and had their completed registration packet did receive a spot for their child in kindergarten at Nordstrom.
In the past four years, Nordstrom has had between three to four kinder classes with about 90 to 100 students total.
