MORGAN HILL — The Vince Pacheco era of Live Oak basketball has come and gone.

After one season, Pacheco has resigned as head coach of the Live Oak boy’s basketball team, as announced Wednesday by Athletic Director Mark Cummins.

Pacheco was asked to step down Tuesday during a meeting with Cummins and Live Oak principal Nicholas Boden, Pacheco said.

“We appreciate his time and dedication to our basketball program and wish him well in his future coaching endeavors,” Cummins said in a statement.

The Acorns finished 7-18 overall and 3-10 in league play this year after winning two games in 2008 and four in 2007. The 2009 team produced the program’s first all-league honoree in two seasons.

“I’m shocked right now,” Pacheco said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “I was told the school is taking the program in a different direction — whatever that means. I’ve only heard positive things about the team since I got here. I never saw this coming.”

Cummins was instructed by administrators not to comment on the situation, but stated Pacheco was not a good fit for the program as it moves “in a positive direction.”

Pacheco came to Live Oak after coaching at Yerba Buena for six seasons.

“I cannot see this being a basketball issue,” Pacheco said. “I enjoyed the Morgan Hill community. I will miss the atmosphere here.”

Live Oak still plans to set up a summer basketball program in the coming weeks.
