A retirement reality check

Decades ago, there was a popular book titled “What They Don't Teach You at Harvard Business School.” Perhaps someday, another book will appear to discuss certain aspects of the retirement experience that go unrecognized - the “fine print,” if you will. Here are some little things that can be frequently overlooked.

Healthy tips just for kids

Like every parent, I worry about the health of my children. In my case, my worry is colored by the fact that I was obese as a teenager. One of the first questions I asked my pediatrician was how to prevent the same from happening to my child. And my child wasn’t even 2 weeks old.

Tragedy in Colorado hits close to home

Having grown up in Colorado, the news this summer has been especially tough. First the devastating fires that took so many homes, including that of a woman I know who graduated from my high school the same year I did. Yet the sucker punch that followed the fires is the travesty that stays with me.

Youth ‘thrive’ at Gilroy church

It may be a cliché, but that makes it no less true: Every religion is only a generation away from extinction. One local church that is not about to let that happen is Gilroy's Foothills Church (8335 Church St.).

Your Office Coach: Clarify division of labor to end overwork

Q: I work for a very demanding boss who apparently feels that I can handle any task in the office. He assigns all the extra work to me instead of spreading it out among the staff. Even though he has no problem with my co-workers, he rarely gives them any additional responsibilities.

Are you a ‘hands-on’ investor?

The investment world can be complex – so you may not want to navigate it alone. But when it comes to getting professional advice, you certainly have an abundance of choices. How can you know which approach is right for you?

The high-stakes and exciting ‘bidding for slam’

Last time we talked about the hold-up play to effectively sever the communication link between your opponents and minimize the number of tricks they can take. This time, we will talk about one of the most exciting auctions in bridge: bidding for slam. It’s not always the most comfortable process, but it’s definitely more exciting because the stakes are very high.

Time to check progress toward retirement goals

Now that another year is ending, it’s a good time to take stock of where you are on your journey toward financial security. Of course, you could find many different “measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gain considerable information just by asking yourself some basic questions.
