Dear Editor,
There are angels who walk among us on this earth and a great number of them end up helping and educating our children. Mike Crocker was one of those angels. We lost him here on earth July 16, after a long illness that never interfered with his living life to the fullest.
Of course he would claim just to be a man who loved life and had strong passions for many of its aspects. He was one of those rare individuals who could radiate joy when talking to you about those passions.
Whether it was a story about how he met his wife, how proud he was of his daughter and grandchildren, biking, tennis or his work with other cancer survivors, you could catch his enthusiasm for the topic at hand. He had a positive infectious spirit that could carry you along and make you feel connected. It was when he talked about children and education you felt that passion go up a notch.
I was privileged to be his neighbor and have many such talks with him. I also had the opportunity to see him in interaction with children and staff when he had been principal at Jackson Elementary. He was a force to see.
I was equally impressed with how well he handled his impending death. He knew his time was limited, but he was not going to waste a minute of it. He remained upbeat and used his time to help counsel others experiencing cancer. All the while he kept active in sports and with the educational and children issues. He loved his life, his family, his chosen profession and the children whose lives he touched in such a positive way. He has gone from us way too soon. We now have to go on with one less angel here on earth.
