A 40-year-old Hollister man was shot and killed and another 34-year-old man was critically wounded, according to the Hollister Police Department.
Hollister police officers dispatched to the 800 block of South Street at 8:56 p.m. Sunday on a report of shots fired, found two victims on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds, according to a statement from police.
Police pronounced Noel David Garcia, 40, of Hollister, dead at the scene from “at least one gunshot wound,” according to the announcement. It was Hollister’s fourth murder in 2011, according to police.
The second victim, Jose Martin Ureno, 34, was flown to a Bay Area hospital. He underwent emergency surgery and is on life support, according to police.
Witness descriptions were limited to the vehicles involved – a tan pick-up truck, possibly a Chevy Silverado, and a white sedan. There is no further suspect information at this time, according to police.
Police Capt. David Westrick said officers responded within seconds of getting the initial call. He did not know definitively where the homicide victim was shot.
He said the confrontation started “with some sort of disturbance.”
“I don’t know how to characterize it other than that,” he said, noting that it is early in the investigation and police are collecting more details.
Police interviewed residents who were home at the time or in the area. Witnesses thought one of the two types of vehicles may have been there before the reported shootings.
