Two Morgan Hill Unified School District elementary schools recently received high honors from the California Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support program.
San Martin/Gwinn Environmental Science Academy and Nordstrom Elementary School earned Silver designations in the PBIS program from the California PBIS Coalition, according to a Morgan Hill Unified School District announcement.
The recognized programs at each school site “focus on universal interventions and school-wide behavior support of all students,” according to staff.
“(The program) ranges from teaching and acknowledging a small number of positively stated behavioral expectations to developing individualized interventions for students and parents who require additional social, emotional and behavioral support,” according to staff.
San Martin/Gwinn Environmental Science Academy is a kindergarten through eighth grade site located at 13745 Llagas Ave. Nordstrom is a K-5 campus located at 1425 E. Dunne Ave.
The state-wide PBIS is based on six principles:
• Develop a continuum of scientifically based behavior, social emotional and academic interventions and supports;
• Use data to make decisions and solve problems;
• Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior;
• Teach and encourage pro-social skills and behaviors;
• Implement evidence-based behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability; and
• Screen universally and monitor student performance & progress continuously.
