“Red Phone, I have been waiting for some kind of pavement markings, such as the white lines on other crosswalks, to be installed on Third Street and Monterey Road (part of the Third Street Promenade). The ‘cones’ on the sidewalks are not what motorists see first, especially at night and when raining. I would hate to see a pedestrian mishap when some simple crosswalk striping would alleviate the problem.”
“Red Phone, is the city of Morgan Hill going to mark the crosswalks across Monterey Road at Third Street, so that they are visible to drivers?”
Red Phone: Dear Where are the Crosswalks, Red Phone contacted Julie Behzad, senior civil engineer with the city, who said because the paver design defines the crosswalk, there is no need nor requirement to paint additional lines at Third Street and Monterey Road.
“In addition, there are safety measures in place to alert motorists of the cross walk, including lit bollards in the intersection and on the Third Street corner ramps, LED lights at the intersection, and reflective “Yield to Pedestrian Crossing” signs on both north and southbound lanes on Monterey Road,” Behzad said. “The speed humps in the Monterey Road and Third Street area should further slow down traffic. Motorists are reminded that the speed limit in the downtown area is designated a 25 mph zone due to the high number of pedestrians.”
There you have it, good callers. No painted crosswalks are planned. Stay safe.
Day laborers are distracting
“Red Phone, what they do in Cupertino regarding the day laborers is have them on the side of the street where the company is looking away from the street. My children live near this intersection and the day laborers are always watching their every move. It’s very intimidating to be that close and trying to mind their own business, it’s a distraction from what I have experienced.”
Red Phone: Dear Distracted, your comment is a bit confusing. If you mean the day laborers stand on a side street and those looking for workers would have to turn down that street to talk to them, that may work. But, where they are now is obvious and provides easy access. As far as them watching your child’s every move, Red Phone is sure they are just as safe walking down Main Avenue as they are in any parking lot, or place where large numbers of people are coming and going.
Hope that helps.
