‘Once on This Island’ at Mount Madonna School
Mount Madonna School is presenting “Once on This Island,” a Caribbean adaptation of the popular Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale “The Little Mermaid.”
The play will be performed Dec. 15, 7:30pm; Dec. 16, 2pm, 7:30pm and Dec. 17, 2pm at the school, 491 Summit Road, in Watsonville. Tickets are $12 adults and $9 for students 16 and under.
“Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues, nurses and falls in love with Daniel, a young man from a wealthy family. When Daniel is returned to his people, the gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death.
The story unfolds in a style reminiscent of story theater with minimal, yet colorful sets and costumes. Creative dance or movement-driven staging is also part of the show’s style, calling upon performers to portray trees, wild animals and even a fierce rainstorm.
