Morgan Hill to Dole Out “Green” Bags

Morgan Hill – Beginning in August, the city will start a campaign to provide residents with reusable green shopping bags stuffed with coupons and information such as the Garbage Guide. The bags will be hung on doorknobs throughout the city.

In step with California’s newly enforced law requiring grocery stores to sell reusable sacks, the green shopper bag labeled “Saving the world … one shopping bag at a time” encourages people to use it in the place of store bags, thereby cutting down on excess materials. The bags also include tips on how residents can become “greener shoppers,” such as purchasing products made from recycled material

Gardens One Step Closer

Gilroy – With investors eager to see returns on their bonds, the city plans to acquire the continually cash-strapped Gilroy Gardens by the end of November.

The City Council has voted 4-0-1 to finalize a list of conditions for the purchase of Gilroy Gardens. Councilmen Paul Correa and Peter Arellano were absent for personal reasons, and Councilman Russ Valiquette recused himself since he works at the park.

“Staff got us all of ours answers, so we officially made the decision to go ahead,” said Councilman Dion Bracco, referring to upcoming financial and environmental inspections of the 536 acre property the city plans to buy for $12.4 million, the dollar-for-dollar amount of outstanding bonds belonging to the parks investors. Bracco said this money will come from funds in the city’s capital improvement budget and cash reserved for an arts center the city has postponed while it studies its financial feasibility.

Big Rig Overturns, Clogs Highway 152

Gilroy – An empty freight hauler made an unsafe turn at 12:39pm Wednesday on Highway 152 east of Bloomfield Road, overturning and blocking both lanes of traffic. The California Highway Patrol opened westbound traffic by 1:07pm, but the eastbound lanes remained closed until 3:40pm, backing up traffic into Gilroy.

As of press time Wednesday, there was no indication of the crash’s cause, said Officer Chris Armstrong, CHP spokesman.

“There will be a lengthy delay,” Armstrong said Wednesday afternoon. “All the back roads are backed up. It’s really bad.”
