Memorial Fund Established For MH Man Wounded In Iraq

Friends of a Morgan Hill family whose son was injured fighting in Iraq have established a memorial fund so members of the public can donate.

To donate to the fund, go to any Wells Fargo branch and ask the teller to look up the “David Shebib Benefit Fund” under their memorial fund list. If they have any problem, they can contact Jason Lekki, branch manager at the Wells Fargo Santa Teresa Branch.

Shebib, 22, a 2002 graduate of Central Continuation High School in Morgan Hill who was injured Dec. 28 by a roadside bomb near Baghdad. Shebib is expected to take months to recover from broken limbs and shrapnel wounds at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C. As a member of the U.S. Army, his medical costs are covered, but the family may incur additional travel costs for visitations.

The fund was opened last week by Hitachi lab employees who work with Shebib’s mother. The fund’s total donations up to day equal nearly $2,600. It was opened with $1,357 last Friday.

A benefit car wash for the Shebib family is planned for 8am, Feb. 3, at Napa Auto Parts at 17650 Monterey Road.

American Red Cross Issues Blood Shortage Alert

The American Red Cross Northern California Blood Services Region has announced that several blood supply types are at critically low levels.

“Donors busy schedules throughout the holidays and into the new year impacts turn-out at blood drives, resulting in a dwindling blood supply. At the same time, any increase in an emergency need for blood at local hospitals means the need for blood is even more critical,” said Jay Winkenbach, CEO of the Northern California Region. “To date, no surgeries or other medical procedures at hospitals served by the Red Cross in the Bay Area have been cancelled, but if donations do not increase, non-emergency procedures may have to be postponed in the near future.”

As part of a humanitarian system of sharing blood based on patient need, the Red Cross continues to work closely with other Red Cross blood centers which are providing blood to Northern California to help meet patient need. “Other blood centers are in the same predicament,” Winkenbach said, “We are just getting by at this point and must see an immediate increase in blood donations to provide stability to the local blood supply.”

The Red Cross in Northern California provides more than 350 units of blood every day to 32 hospitals. “To assure a consistent availability of blood, the supply of blood should be maintained at a three to five day level. Currently, the region has less than a one-day supply of type-O and B-negative blood; all other types are at less than desirable levels as well,” said Winkenbach.

Blood drives are regularly scheduled throughout Santa Clara County. Most healthy people who are at least 17 years old and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds are eligible to donate blood every 56 days. Donors must bring appropriate identification such as a driver’s license or an American

Red Cross donor card.
