Gilroy Man Injured After Smashing Utility Pole

A 42-year-old Gilroy man was taken by helicopter to Regional Medical Center in San Jose after a one vehicle accident Sunday.

Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Joe Sampson said the driver, Roman Salvador, 40, also of Gilroy, was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“It looks as if he simply lost control of the vehicle,” Sampson said Monday.

The accident occurred at approximately 11:41am on Monterey Road just north of Cochrane Avenue. The car slammed into a power pole on the southbound side of Monterey. The pole was damaged, and PG&E responded, installing another pole to brace the damaged pole. Reuben Galvan received serious injuries in the accident, Sampson said.

Reserve Deputy Saves a Life

A longtime reserve officer with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office probably saved the life of an elderly male on Jan. 2 at the south county substation in San Martin.

Reserve Deputy Duke Merino was at the substation when the man arrived, seeking medical assistance, at approximately 12:20am. The man was having chest pains and attempting to drive himself to the hospital when he began to feel worse. He remembered seeing signs for the substation and assumed someone there would be able to help him. Unfortunately, the station was closed, and there were no other emergency personnel in the area.

Luckily for the elderly male, Merino was working on paperwork at the substation. He called for paramedics, and while waiting for them to arrive, he gave what assistance he could to the man.

Later, it was discovered the man was having a heart attack and could have died had not Merino been there to help him.

“He is such a dedicated reserve deputy,” Deputy Serg Palanov said Monday. “A reserve deputy is required to work two days a month. He usually works three days a week. And he doesn’t get paid for this. He has been doing this for probably 20-plus years.”

Participating organizations include Blush Boutique, EMF Motorsports, Guglielmo Winery, Johnson Lumber Company, Michelina’s House of Haute Style, Monterey Auto Service, Morgan Hill Barber Shop, Morgan Hill Tobacco Company, Thomas Kincade Company and Tiffany Salon.

Caltrain Rates Increase

Caltrain implemented a 5.6 percent increase to its base fare on Jan. 1.  The base fare for a one-way ticket increased by 25 cents. Zone charges did not go up.

This is the second of a two-phased fare increase which was approved by the Caltrain policy board last spring to address the railroad’s significant budget shortfall, which has been further exacerbated by higher fuel costs.

The 5.6 percent increase is expected to raise $600,000 during the remaining six months in the current fiscal year, or $1.2 million annually. The increase will be reflected in the price of all tickets except the Senior/Disabled/Youth one-way fare, which remains unchanged. Train times will not change.
