Holiday Food Drive Goes Online

Second Harvest Food Bank is encouraging donors to show their support through the Internet this holiday season.

The nonprofit agency serving mainly low-income families in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties kicked off its holiday food drive in October, hoping to raise $4 million and 1.8 million pounds of food by January.

The agency raised $12.8 million last year, and hopes to raise $13.2 million this year – including the $4 million from the holiday drive.

A spokeswoman for Second Harvest said the agency prefers monetary donations that allow the food bank to make wholesale purchases that stretch the dollar.

The group collected about $500,000 via online donations last year, but expects to top that this year thanks in part to Santa Clara-based NVIDIA Corp., a big-name corporate sponsor specializing in programmable computer graphics.
