County Confirms First West Nile Case

A Monte Sereno man has been confirmed to have the first case of West Nile Virus in Santa Clara County, according to a Thursday announcement from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department. The 73-year old man was hospitalized for one night and is recovering at home. The Santa Clara County Public Health Laboratory confirmed the West Nile virus infection on July 31, 2007.

The virus, which is not transmitted person-to-person, spreads to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people infected with the virus exhibit no symptoms, while some infected individuals will have mild or moderate symptoms such as fever, headache and body aches, according to health officials. But the virus can cause severe symptoms in people over the age of 50, officials warned, and pose a higher risk of severe illness for those with high blood pressure. Less than 1 percent of bites from infected mosquitoes cause severe disease.

A toll-free line – 877-WNV-BIRD – has been established for reporting suspected cases of West Nile Virus. Additional information about the virus in California can be found at www.westnile.ca.gov, www.cdc.gov/westnile and www.sccvector.org.
