San Jose – New Santa Clara County Fire Chief Kenneth Waldvogel takes over the top job with a background rich in experience with the department, starting 28 years ago.

Waldvogel, who was officially “pinned” in a ceremony May 1, has served as acting fire chief for nine months. Prior to that position, he was assistant fire chief for four years.

“Ken brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position of fire chief,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage. “He is dedicated to providing high-level quality services to our community.”

The new chief, who will be paid $204,951, has been certified as a fire officer and as a chief officer by the California State Board of Fire Services. A member of the Santa Clara County Fire Chiefs’ Association, the Institute of Fire Engineers and the International Association of Fire Chief, he has been certified as a chief officer designee by the Commission on Chief Officer Designation International.

“I am honored to assume the role of fire chief,” Waldvogel said. “County Fire has been an organization for over 60 years, with a long history of good quality customer service and a high degree of professionalism. I intend to continue providing the best service possible to residents in our community.”

During his 30 years of fire experience, Waldvogel has held the rank of firefighter/engineer, fire captain, battalion chief, deputy chief of operations and deputy chief of training.

“I am pleased that the Board of Supervisors selected someone with the expertise and long-time knowledge of County Fire to lead the department,” said County Executive Pete Kutras.

Waldvogel’s background includes an associate degree in fire technology and a bachelor of science degree in fire administration. He is completing his last year in the National Fire Academy’s four-year Executive Fire Officer program. He is married with two teenage sons.

SCCFD provides service to Morgan Hill and other communities within the county, including Campbell, Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and Saratoga.
