Fifty-five brand new ambulances with the Rural/Metro emblem are now driving the streets in Santa Clara County. Rural/Metro was awarded the job last December to provide 911 emergency ambulance services for the county. Rural/Metro employs 250 paramedics and emergency medical technicians to serve the county.

The decision to switch to Rural/Metro, a corporation based in Scottsdale, Arizona, was rooted in cost-savings for the county. The $375 million five-year contract was approved 3-2 with District 1 Supervisor Mike Wasserman casting a supporting vote. Dropping the previous contract with American Medical Response was estimated at more than 12 percent.

Employees of AMR were upset with the decision in part because they had been the county’s ambulance provider for more than 70 years.

Rural/Metro’s general manager Travis Kusman said he’s excited to be a part of the community.

“We stand behind our patients, the residents of Santa Clara County, and especially our employees who bring years of experience and leadership in the emergency medical services area,” Kusman said.
