South Valley residents are invited to attend a special event at the San Martin Presbyterian Church, 13200 Lincoln Ave., Aug. 10. The 10:30 a.m. worship service will feature an appearance by award-winning musician and storyteller Jack Pearson.
A resident of Minneapolis, Minn., Pearson is well-known throughout the Upper Midwest for his entertainment which appeals to all ages, and he appears at over 200 concerts, workshops, conferences and assemblies each year.
Growing up in a musical Midwestern family set the stage for the night in 1965 when Pearson discovered the guitar while gathered with other youngsters around a roaring campfire. Since then he has mastered an amazing number of instruments: banjo, mandolin, fiddle, jaw harp and spoons. In addition, he has written innumerable songs. After studying philosophy at the University of Minnesota, Pearson established a career as “Mr. Song-Strummin’ Story Man,” following a “joyous path of musical storytelling.”
Caring deeply about the arts in education, Pearson visits elementary schools around the country as a performer and resident artist, leading workshops for students in which they “explore the joyful world of music writing, storytelling, and folk instruments.”
He also visits churches where he brings “a refreshing creativity to the timeless faith-journey.”
This summer Pearson is serving as a Musician in Residence at the Mt. Hermon Christian Conference Center in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His visit to San Martin will allow him to share his faith through his own unique blend of songs and stories. Audio samples of his performances are available at his web site, www.ottertunity.com or on the telephone toll- free at 1-800-582-4838.
The Rev. Ed Breeden, pastor of San Martin Presbyterian Church, has been an admirer of Pearson for many years. Commenting upon the August 10 local appearance, he says, We are really fortunate to have someone of his caliber appear in San Martin” and hopes there will be many visitors because “this is one service not to miss.”

We’re all familiar with the “bounce houses” people rent for children’s birthday parties, but Michael Gill, an events organizer in England, has taken the idea a step further. If it catches on in this country, his invention will enable a church to go to its worshipers.
The air-filled structure is made of fire-retardant plastic, and its steeple is 47 feet tall, with stained glass windows and an altar included. The building can be inflated in three hours, and sells for $35,000 – perhaps the answer to struggling congregations in South Valley that are having difficulty dealing with our high property prices.
