San Martin – Attorneys asked to defer David Vincent Reyes plea to July 13, saying they needed extra time to enhance audio tapes relevant to the case. Reyes confessed to the murder of Franca Barsi, his on-again, off-again girlfriend, in September, according to Gilroy Police Detective Mitch Madruga.
Barsi, a Gilroy single mother, was remembered by friends and family as a vivacious former Gilroy Garlic Queen. Police found Barsi dead at her Westwood Drive condominium Sept. 13, 2006.
Reyes was arrested the following day after a car chase that ran from San Jose to Gilroy and back. His plea has been delayed multiple times since Oct. 20, when he was first scheduled to appear in court.
