Stanford – With former Live Oak star Dustin Muhn playing one of the leading roles, California defeated BYU 37-7 Saturday at Stanford’s Steuber Stadium to win its fourth straight rugby national championship and its 23rd title overall.

Muhn, the only freshman on the field for either team, scored two tries and led all scorers with 10 points. He scored the Bears’ first try of the game at the 3-minute mark and added his second in the 80th minute.

Of his first score, a slashing dived into the right corner of the end zone, Muhn said, “Credit to my teammates for moving the ball through the hands, and I was able to get around the corner.”

As a senior at Live Oak, Muhn was an All-Tri-County Athletic League football selection and Utility Player of the Year in 2005. He also led the Acorns rugby team to a 17-2-1 season in 2006 and a Skyhawk Conference Championship. He was selected as the MVP of the Pacific Coast Invitational Rugby Tournament in 2005 and 2006.
