Live Oak's Dustin Muhn fakes a punt on fourth down and runs for

Acorns’ Running back Dustin Muhn honored as TCAL’s best utility
player and first team all-league selection to cap his senior
season
Hill – The Live Oak Acorns’ running back Dustin Muhn had a senior season to remember, gaining 1,477 yards on 160 carries with 15 rushing touchdowns in the regular season to help lead Live Oak into the CCS playoffs. This week Muhn can add a Tri County Athletic League all-league first team selection and best utility player honors to his 2005 accomplishments.

Muhn finished second in the TCAL in rushing and scoring and averaged 9.2 yards every time he touched the ball. He also return kicks, punted and played defensive back for the Acorns.

“It feels great,” Muhn said of being selected to the all-league team. “Last year at the end of the season I was kind of like ‘Oh well, there’s always next season.’ It’s kind of sad now that it is really over, but we had a great year and it was fun while it lasted.”

A three-year varsity starter for the Acorns’ and two time all-league selection, Muhn is soft spoken and modest, giving much of the credit for his success to the coaches and teammates.

“I look back and see a whole lot of improvement because I was able to play with better players when I was young,” Muhn said of his career at Live Oak. “I learned more than just football. I think everybody has.”

At 5-foot-8, 160 pounds Muhn was a versatile player for Live Oak with his speed, good hands and great balance. His ability to run north and south, not side to side, and set up his blockers, along with his speed allowed him to exploit the holes created by the Acorns’ offensive line.

“He is a tremendous young man,” said Acorns’ coach Rick Booth. “He has a great work ethic and it was a pleasure to coach him and watch him develop these last three years.”

Muhn was pulled up to the varsity squad during his sophomore season at Live Oak to help out in place of injured starters and comfortably fit into the running back position. He said he would like to continue playing football at the level, but has not decided where he will attend college, yet. UC Berkeley and Cal Poly are on Muhn’s list, as well as his desire to stay in California.

When Muhn looks back on his career at Live Oak he believes he has gained a lot more experience and learned much more than just football.

“Football is considered, in a lot of ways, to be a step into manhood and our coaches taught us about skills on the field and off the field,” explained Muhn. “It was a great experience.”
