SAN MARTIN – A high speed chase exceeding speeds of 100 mph ended Thursday with a California Highway Patrol car in a ditch near Sixth Street and Rucker Avenue in San Martin.
No one was injured in the pursuit that began when CHP officer Jason Page attempted to pull over a man on a 1984 Kawasaki motorcycle on U.S. 101 near Cochrane Road in Morgan Hill for a speeding violation, said CHP spokeswoman Terry Mayes.
The motorcyclist accelerated to speeds faster than 100 mph and took the Masten Avenue exit toward Sixth Street. With Page still following, the motorcyclist jumped the ditch at the intersection of Sixth Street and Rucker Avenue and continued driving through an eucalyptus grove, Mayes said. Page could not make it over the ditch.
CHP officers later found the motorcycle in a field about a half mile away, but the driver has not been identified, Mayes said.
“(The motorcycle)) was pretty old and beat up, but apparently it could still go fast,” Mayes said. “Right now we are looking into if it was stolen.”
