Angels 18, Indians 10

The Angels defeated the Indians 18-10 at Britton on Saturday afternoon by breaking the game open in the top of the first inning. The Angels sent 13 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning, scoring nine runs on five walks, singles by Nelson Pyle and Bradley Morris, a RBI single from Mitchell Pasek, a RBI double from Conor Havstad, and a 3-RBI double by John Forestieri. The Indians battled back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four runs on singles from Josiah Wylie, Jason Smith, Michael Medland, and Frankie Palmer. Angels’ pitcher John Forestieri ended the inning with back-to-back strikeouts. The Angels continued their offensive showcase in the second inning, batting through the order once again and scoring five runs on three walks, a RBI single from Morris, a RBI double from Dylan Kral, and another 3-RBI double from Forestieri. The Indians got back one run in the bottom of the inning on a single from Casey Dawes, who stole second and third. Dawes looked to be stranded on third as the Angels’ Forestieri struck out the next two batters, but a long single from Wylie scored Dawes. The Angels ended the inning on the next batter when right-fielder Morris caught a towering fly ball for the third out.

The Indians finally were able to keep the Angels from scoring in the third inning with new pitcher Medland getting the first out on a line drive back to the mound. The Angels’ Tyler Pederson reached first on a fielding error and stole second and third, but was unable to score, as Medland pitched a strikeout and shortstop Palmer caught in infield fly for the last out. The Indians added a run in the bottom of the third on a single from Medland, who stole second and third and came home on a hit by Ryan Perez. The Angels weren’t done scoring, adding three runs in the top of the fourth on a double by Pyle, a single into center field from Forestieri to score Pyle, a walk to Howard and a 2-RBI single by Pasek to score Forestieri and Howard. The Indians added a run in the bottom of the fourth when Dawes reached base on an error, stole second and third and scored on a hit by Zack McKerrow. The Angels got out of the inning on a strikeout by pitcher Jimmy Hagan, a great running grab of a grounder and sprint to second base by shortstop Havstad and fly ball hit to center fielder Pyle.

The Indians again kept the Angels from scoring in the fifth inning; after giving up a leadoff double, Indians’ pitcher Medland threw a strikeout for the first out. The Indians then turned the double play on a grounder to first baseman Wylie, who tagged the bag and then threw to third baseman McKerrow, who tagged the runner sliding in from second base. The Indians added a run in the bottom of the inning on a single by Medland, who showed some great base-running skills, stealing second and third and taking home on a passed ball. The Angels completed their scoring in the sixth inning with one run on a double from Forestieri, who then showed some real speed by scoring on a single from Howard. The Angels kept the Indians scoreless in the bottom of the inning, retiring the side in order when pitcher Howard threw a strikeout, catcher Pasek pounced on a bunt and fired to first baseman Pyle for the out, and a grounder back to Howard on the mound.

The Indians defense kept the Angels scoreless in the seventh, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts by pitcher Perez and a ground out to third baseman McKerrow. The Indians made a last attempt in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs on a walk to McKerrow, who was advanced by a sacrifice by Wylie, a double by Smith, and a double by Medland, which also scored Smith.
