Morgan Hill – Police are on the trail of a suspect who allegedly assaulted a Morgan Hill man sending him to the hospital after attacking him with a baseball bat the evening of Aug. 18 in the Oak Glen Plaza shopping center in north Morgan Hill.

The attack occurred just before 7pm as the victim was walking towards a store in the center, which is located at the intersection of Monterey Road and Wright Avenue. Just before entering the business, he apparently began exchanging words and “gestures,” with another man outside the store, according to Morgan Hill police Cmdr. David Swing.

The confrontation escalated into a physical fight, which was broken up when the man police are looking for took a baseball bat from a nearby vehicle and whacked the victim with it several times, striking him at least once on the back of the head. The assailant and the other man then fled the scene, witnesses at the scene told police.

The victim was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment, Swing said.

Police closed the plaza for a short time after the incident. Officers found several items that were left behind by the suspect, but were unable to find the suspect or the man the victim was fighting with before the assault.

Anyone with information about the incident or the suspect is asked to contact Morgan Hill police Det. Greg Dini at 779-2101. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 947-STOP.
