Five days after the U.S. Census was due, the numbers are in – 58 percent of Morgan Hill residents have mailed in their census forms.
A participation tracker on the U.S. Census Web site clocks in the national rate at 56 percent. In 2000, the decennial survey gathered 77 percent participation from Morgan Hill homes. Wisconsin is making the most headway with 69 percent participation.
Included in the calculation of its participation rate are questionnaires that the U.S. Postal Service deems “undeliverable,” suggesting the home or apartment is vacant.
Residents who missed mailing their forms by April 1, or “Census Day” since 1930, the bureau will still accept forms through mid-April. Starting May 1, census workers will traipse door to door to track down residents who failed to turn it in. According to the Census Bureau, it costs about $57 per taxpayer to send temporary employees into neighborhoods to retrieve forms. Mailing the response only costs 42 cents.
