SAN JOSE – The Morgan Hill Bronco White team won its first Sectional All-Star tournament game at PAL Stadium, defeating a very strong Santa Clara 4 -2.
Morgan Hill won behind strong pitching from Kenny Hall, Travis Thompson and Conner Sutton.
Hall pitched the first three innings. The first two batters of the game scored runs for Santa Clara, but that is all the Morgan Hill defense would give up.
Thompson came in in the fourth inning and threw three shutout innings for the win, and Sutton shut the door in the seventh with a 1-2-3 inning.
The White team had to wait until the fifth inning before it could get on the board. Raul Bueno drew a walk, Hall had a single up the center.
Nick Ramirez drove in the first run of the game with a single, and Jeff Smith followed with a single of his own to drive in the second run.
In the top half of the seventh inning, the White team finally took the lead. Bueno again led things off with a walk.
Hall sacrificed him to second, and Ryan Ramos hit a screaming line drive past the second baseman for the RBI. Ramos eventually ended up at third base on an errant throw from the center fielder. Ramirez then beat out an infield hit to score Ramos.
Defensive standouts for Morgan Hill were Billy Birrell at first, recording 14 putouts. Second baseman Tim Andrade recorded a pair of nice assists in the third inning.
Thompson showed off his arm four times, making long hard throws from third base to get the speedy Santa Clara runners and had two more assists to help himself out during his three innings of pitching.
And Hall made two nice plays at shortstop in the final inning of the game to help close out the win for the team.
The next game for the team will be against the team from Los Altos at 5 p.m. on Friday at Pal Stadium.
In their game against Fremont played before Morgan Hill took the field, Los Altos won 14-3 to advance in the winner’s bracket.
