MORGAN HILL — The eighth- and seventh-grade boy’s basketball teams from Britton Middle School qualified for the playoffs with a sweep over Martin Murphy.

This is the first time in four years both teams have advanced in the same season.

The seventh-grade Britton team won 28-26, with Martin Murphy shooting to tie at the end of regulation.

The eighth-grade Bobcats won 53-21, matching the seventh-graders with a 7-1 record.

The playoffs begin today at Chaboya Middle School. The seventh-grade team plays at 3:30 p.m., and the eighth-grade team tips off at 5.

Cheetahs rout Crossroads Christian

The eighth-grade boy’s basketball team from Charter School earned its first victory against the Crossroads Eagles, 47-13.

The stars of the game were Jackson Gion, Ty Miller, Ty Gardner, Trevor Mitoma and Vincent Czeropski. They scored with the help of Czeropski’s five consecutive rebounds, Gion’s quick layups, Gardner’s excellent passing, Miller’s nice outside shooting and Mitoma’s superb bank shots.

Charter’s defense slowed down Crossroads breakaways from the inside. Crossroads showed great effort on the court and never gave up.

The Cheetahs next face Gabilan Hills at Oakwood.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cougars place first at Saratoga

The seventh-grade girl’s basketball team from Saint Catherine beat out seven other programs from Santa Clara County to place first in Saratoga’s Sacred Heart Basketball Tournament, a four-day event that ended Feb 1.

Most of the Cougars began playing for the local chapter of SCBA — and continue to play there.

The Cougars have defeated several previously unbeaten teams from San Jose.

GIRLS SOCCER

Charter nips Spring Grove

The Charter School sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade girl’s soccer team overcame wet conditions to beat the Spring Grove Tigers 4-2 at the Morgan Hill Outdoor Sports Center recently.

Cheetahs center forward Sarah Lewis collected a hat trick, scoring three of the four goals in the first half.

The final tally was netted by Katie Chagnon toward the end of the game, securing the win for the Cheetahs.

Many times, the aggressive Tigers attempted shots on goal but were stopped short by Cheetahs sweeper Grace Hargadon, who allowed only two.

The Cheetahs face the San Juan Padres next.
