A recent editorial in the Morgan Hill Times urged parents in the district to lobby school board members of the Morgan Hill Unified School District (MHUSD) to adopt University of California/California State University admission requirements solely as the district’s graduation requirements.

I wish to clear up some misunderstandings about this topic and share some basic knowledge with your readers to help them better understand these requirements. Simply, the graduation requirements of the State of California and admission requirements to the UC/CSU system are not the same. If the district were to adopt the UC/CSU entrance requirements as graduation requirements, students would not fulfill the state defined high school graduation requirements and thus could not receive a state approved diploma

We strongly encourage the general public and our local media to place a call to the district office to verify the accuracy of information distributed by anyone regarding graduation and admission requirements.

This is public information and our office is willing and able to provide your editorial board and reporting staff with factual information regarding requirements for graduation from an approved California high school and for admission to a UC/CSU program.

For the past 18 months, members of the Secondary Task Force have been meeting to bring recommendations to the Board of Trustees related to high school graduation requirements. MHUSD welcomes greater coverage of such meetings to let the public see the progression of the decision-making process before the board is later urged to rescind a decision.

Thank you.

Carolyn McKennan, Ed.D.

Superintendent, MHUSD
