Morgan Hill Unified School District is calling all community members who would like to read a book selection to an elementary school class during a special March 4 “Read-in” event.
Partnering with United Way South County as part of the National Read Across America program, MHUSD will assign Morgan Hill community leaders, city and school district officials, police officers, firefighters and community volunteers from local businesses and agencies to classrooms in eight district elementary schools.
Community members interested in partaking and/or donating $25 to purchase a book for the classroom or school library should call (408) 201-6072 by this Friday, Feb. 28. District staff will then contact all volunteers by phone or email with the information needed in advance of March 4.
“The District is proud to participate in Read Across America to celebrate and promote the joy of reading,” Superintendent Steve Betando said. “We hope that on that day every child will be reading with a caring adult.”
During the event, the volunteer readers will tell the students a little bit about themselves and why reading is important to them before reading the donated book to the entire class. The book will be signed by the volunteer in a label that is placed inside the front cover and then the book will permanently be a part of the class library with a second book donated to the school library.
