Gilroy – A Morgan Hill woman broke her leg after causing a head-on collision on Watsonville Road west of Gilroy, likely while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, California Highway Patrol officers said.

Trisha Hodges, 20, was driving a 1990 Volvo 240 DL northbound in the southbound lane at 1:25pm Thursday when she hit Cristiaan Kuerschner, a 25-year-old man from Hollister driving a 1994 Dodge Dakota who was traveling south just north of Burchell Road. Hodges fractured her right thigh and calf bones and lost consciousness. A CALSTAR air ambulance flew Hodges to Regional Medical Center of San Jose. There was no identification on her person or in her vehicle, and she could not be identified until midday Friday.

Kuerschner suffered contusions to his left forearm, but refused medical treatment. California Highway Patrol officers are still investigating the crash, but said they suspect Hodges crossed into the wrong lane due to the influence of alcohol or drugs. Hodges is under arrest, but remained unconscious in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit Friday, said CHP Officer Chris Armstrong.

Watsonville Road was closed for 90 minutes while the crash was cleared.
