A Morgan Hill man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after stabbing another man several times and pointing a gun at him, police said.

Anthony Hernandez, 23 of Morgan Hill, was arrested shortly after police responded to several 911 calls reporting the incident on Berry Court, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Jerry Neumayer. Hernandez allegedly stabbed the 37-year-old victim seven times with a knife, then went to his car to retrieve a hand gun which he pointed at the man while threatening to kill him Thursday night.

The victim and suspect knew each other, and were engaged in a verbal argument that boiled over into physical violence, Neumayer said.

Police responded to an apartment complex at 260 Berry Court in west Morgan Hill about 9:34 p.m. Thursday, Neumayer said. When officers arrived, they saw Hernandez walking away from the scene and later determined he was a suspect.

Police searched the area and found the alleged victim lying in the center court of the apartment complex with stab wounds, Neumayer said. The Santa Clara County Fire Department and paramedics arrived at the scene to treat the man.

He suffered seven stab wounds in his upper torso area, from his waist to his upper back, Neumayer said.

The victim and witnesses at the scene identified Hernandez as the suspected stabber, police said. After Hernandez stabbed the man, police said he went to his car which was parked at the apartment complex and grabbed a .45-caliber hand gun. He returned to the victim and pointed the gun at him while threatening to kill him, but did not shoot him.

Hernandez then walked back to his car to put the gun in the trunk, then fled on foot into the path of the arriving officers who prevented him from leaving the area. Police later recovered the hand gun and the knife that was used in the stabbing.

The suspect had been dating the victim’s daughter, an adult female, and the couple lived in the apartment complex, Neumayer said. The victim did not live in the complex, and police declined to release his name. The two males were in an argument before the alleged murder attempt, but police did not reveal details about the verbal dispute. The incident is still under investigation.

The victim was transported to San Jose Regional Medical Center, where he was treated for stab wounds that included a severed artery that had to be surgically repaired, Neumayer said. He is in critical but stable condition.

Hernandez was booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.
