The 2013 Relay For Life event that took place Saturday at the Morgan Hill Community Park raised $40,913.53 with 13 teams and 118 participants, according to figures posted on the organization’s website as of Monday. All proceeds go directly to the American Cancer Society.
Relay For Life – the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event – takes place around the globe and claims to be “the largest movement to end the disease,” according to the organization. People from within the community gather to celebrate survivors, remember those lost to cancer and to fight back against this disease. Teams of participants camp out at a local high school, park or fairground, then take turns walking or running around a track or path. Signifying the fact “cancer never sleeps,” relays are overnight, last 24 hours and require each team to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.
