Kicking off all-star tournament play last weekend, the Morgan Hill Pony-13 all-star team won its first two games, while the four MH Pinto all-star teams experienced varied success.
The Pony-13 all-star team started the Sectional Tournament, which is being held at Lou Vierra Field in Santa Clara, by facing San Jose PAL, who they defeated by a score of 4-3. The Pony-13 team scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning on walks to Charlie McClung and Kevin Saign, a double by Joe Forestieri, and base hits by Sean LaBranche and Alika Bantilan.
MH pitcher Ryan Moyano held San Jose PAL scoreless through four innings, then gave way to reliever Alika Bantilan.
In the second game, on Sunday, the Pony-13 team defeated Sunnyvale/Cupertino by a score of 12-8. In the first inning, Sunnyvale/Cupertino (SVC) jumped on top by scoring two runs, however, in the bottom of the first inning, the Pony-13 team answered by scoring three runs on back-to-back hits by Matt Nilmeyer and Phillip Thrappas, walks to Sean LaBranche and Joe Forestieri, a dropped third strike to Kevin Saign, and a deep sacrafice fly to center by Charlie McClung. After SVC put up one more run in the top of the second, the Pony -13 team went to work in the bottom of the second. With hits by Eric Sanchez, Billy Birrell, Joe Forestieri, Alika Bantilan, and Kevin Saign, a couple of walks and a hit batter, the Pony-13 team batted around and put up nine runs. Charlie McClung, Kevin Saign, and Joe Forestieri pitched well for the MH Pony-13 team.
Next up for the Pony-13 team will be Los Altos/Mountain View, on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Lou Vierra field in Santa Clara.
Meanwhile, the MH Pinto all-star teams began play at two different sectional tournaments over the weekend.
The Pinto American A and Pinto National A teams both split their first two games in the Britton sectional tourney on Saturday and Sunday, and will play on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
The Pinto American B and Pinto National B squads both lost their tourney openers in Santa Clara and were scheduled to play each other on Sunday.
