After rallying for an 11-3 victory against rival Santa Clara in their West Zone opener on Thursday, the Morgan Hill Colt A’s ran into a buzzsaw on Friday.

Going up against a left-handed pitcher from the Corona team (Southern California) being scouted by Stanford University, the Colt A’s managed just three hits and fell 6-0 in the double elimination tourney at Valley Christian High in San Jose.

Colt A’s Manager Dave Newton said his team, which plays the winner of the San Jose PAL-Covina (SoCal) morning game at 2pm Saturday, will look for another shot at Corona.

Newton said his starter, Blaine Sutton, pitched a solid game of his own, allowing just six hits.

But the A’s could only manage a pair of hits by Matt Cummins and one from Ryan Evanger.

Against Santa Clara, Cummins surrendered a pair of runs in the first inning before his team backed him up with an offensive outpouring. The A’s batted around in the third inning, scoring five runs.

Meanwhile, the MH Pony 14s all-stars won their Regional Tournament opener 13-0 over Pacific Grove in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

MH’s Alika Bantilan went the distance for a two-hit shutout, and was backed up by a 14-hit attack.

MH plays Campbell at 3pm Saturday at Los Altos’ Rosita Park.

Finally, a fine run came to and end for the MH Pony 13s all-stars at the West Zone Tournament in Fullerton last weekend.

After dropping its opener to Mililani of Hawaii 7-3 last Saturday, MH came back on Sunday to upend Mount Lake Terrace of Washington 6-2 on Sunday.

But the local all-stars, who won section and region titles this season, and were making their second appearance at the West Zones in two seasons, lost their second game on Sunday.

Up against Cypress (SoCal), MH loaded the bases in the first inning with the heart of its order coming up but couldn’t score. That would come back to haunt the local team in a 5-3 elimination loss.

Mililani would end up winning the West Zone tourney, beating Chula Vista North (SoCal) 5-3.

In other Pony Baseball news, the Bronco World Series will be held at Jacks Park in Monterey for the 13th straight year.

The tourney, which draws teams from all over the globe, will be held Aug. 4-9.
