Manny Burns, firefighter for Santa Clara County Fire Department, knew it was coming; the customers wouldn’t accept it, but it happened. On Tuesday, May 27, the Coffee Roasting Club, known as “Coffee” to regulars, closed its doors.

The closing came after the owner was unable to sell the business, but does not attribute it to lack of interest. Regulars were devastated by the closure and have flooded Burns with phone calls.

“There are some new faces,” said Racquel Rojas, an employee at the House of Bagels a block south at East Third Street, “but business has not increased much.”

The same observation was made by Brad Jones, owner of BookSmart.

“There are new faces; the staff has seen some coffee customers,” he said. “We open at 10 a.m. so we miss the morning crowd. We’re looking for the lunch coffee crowd, looking for that caffeine boost. I hope that a new retail store moves in.”

Dan Craig, executive director of the Downtown Association, said there has been some interest in using the space for a café or another coffee bar but that nothing has been decided yet.
