Continuing a recent string that has seen them win eight straight games and outscore the opposition 100-17, the Morgan Hill Mudcats rolled to a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Union City Yankees at Live Oak High on Sunday.

The local semipro baseball squad crushed the Yankees 18-0 in the opener of the two-game series and 10-0 in the nightcap.

MoHill Mudcats Coach Ken Valencia said the much-improved squad, which added talent since last season, has been overwhelming its opponents lately, putting itself in playoff contention.

“The (other teams’) pitching has not been very good. We have college players used to college level pitching and other teams just haven’t had the pitching to compete on this level,” Valencia said.

On Sunday, the Mudcats face the Hayward Tigers with a chance to qualify for Regional Tournament play the following weekend, Valencia said.

In Sunday’s opener, Morgan Hill’s Matt Brotherton tossed a two-hit shutout. And, Brotherton was supported by another outstanding offensive effort. Leadoff hitter Shannon Fernandez scored four runs, James Molina hit a bases-loaded triple in the third, and Matt Hernandez was 2-for-4 with a triple in the fifth.

In the second game, the Mudcats got a combined two-hitter from Anthony D’Albora and Dylan Regan. D’Albora improved his record to 3-0. Regan finished the game by striking out all three batters he faced.

With the Mudcats leading 1-0 in the second, Fernandez hit a grand slam deep over the centerfielder’s head. Jon Michael Porras followed with a double and later scored on a fielder’s choice to cap the five-run inning.

In the fourth, Matt Morgan hit a towering two-run blast deep to left field. Morgan was 2-for-2 and also had a double. Molina added three hits, an RBI and two runs scored for MH.

The previous Sunday, the Mohill Mudcats beat the host Seaside Bombers 15-1 and 22-4 to sweep a doubleheader.
