To help you select just the right book for your child, the Morgan Hill Library has special reading lists by grade level. Here is a selection of books for your first and second graders:

First grade

• Brown. Arthur and the School Pet. D.W. discovers just how speedy Speedy the class pet is when she offers to take care of him during the school holidays.

• Bryant. Shape Spotters. Ms. Carey’s class is looking for shapes in their school. Squares are in the lunchroom, rectangles in the library, and circles outside. Can you find more?

• Johnston. Alien and Possum Hanging Out. Alien and Possum are as opposite as can be. One is shiny, metal, and one of a kind, and the other is fluffy, furry, and one of a skadillion, but they like to hang out together.

• Rylant. Mr. Putter and Tabby Catch the Cold. Mr. Putter has a cold and no one to take care of him. Luckily, his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry and her good dog Zeke know just what to do to help Mr. Putter feel better.

• Thomas. Get Well, Good Knight. Three little dragons are sick in bed. Their foreheads feel hot. Their noses are dripping. Who will help them get better? Why, the Good Knight will, of course!

• Wells. Practice Makes Perfect. Timothy wants to play music in the class talent show, but all he knows how to play is loud.

Second Grade

• Adler. Young Cam Jansen and the Double Beach Mystery. Cam’s good memory helps save the day when a couple of mysteries stump the grown-ups at the beach.

• Cazet. Minnie and Moo and the Potato from Planet X. Minnie and Moo are out in the pasture enjoying the summer day, when a spaceship falls at their feet, and Spud, a potato-shaped alien, climbs out of the wreckage.

• O’Connor. Dear Tooth Fairy. Picture day is coming to Robby’s school. Unfortunately, he is the only child without a “lost tooth” in his whole class. Although he’s written to the Tooth Fairy, Robby is having a hard time being patient. Will he lose his tooth in time for picture day?

• Park. Junie B., First Grader: Toothless Wonder. Junie is the first one in her class to lose a tooth, but she has some issues with the Tooth Fairy.

• Roy. The Runaway Racehorse. Dink, Josh, and Ruth Rose are at it again; solving mysteries that is. This time, Whirlaway, a race horse, mysteriously disappears right before the big race.

• Rylant. Henry and Mudge and Mrs. Hopper’s House. Henry and his big dog Mudge get to “hang out” with Mrs. Hopper, while his parents go to a Valentine’s dance. Mrs. Hopper lives in a castle-like house, plays the violin, and has a room full of costumes which add to the fun.

All of these books are in the library’s easy reader area. Ask a librarian to show you where to find these books the next time you visit the library.
