A Gilroy man was shot in downtown Morgan Hill last night, and police are seeking information about the incident.
Police arrived at the scene of the shooting about 10:24 p.m. Saturday, in response to 911 calls reporting that gun shots had been fired, according to Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Troy Hoefling. Found lying down in the walkway between Fuzia restaurant and Dirty’s Tap and Tacos on Monterey Road was the victim, Omar Rubio, 33.
The victim suffered a gun shot wound to his lower back, as well as a two-inch cut on the back of his head, Hoefling said. He was taken to San Jose Regional Hospital for emergency surgery. His condition was unknown as of late Sunday morning.
Police think Rubio and his shooter, who has not been arrested and is still unknown, were involved in a fight with several other people in the parking area between East Second and East Third streets, based on witness statements. The incident was possibly gang-related, Hoefling said.
“The initial reports were that it was a large fight between several people, and shots rang out,” Hoefling said.
The cut on the back of the victim’s head might have been caused by a broken bottle or drinking glass used as a weapon, Hoefling said. Witnesses said they heard glass breaking during the fight, and officers found broken glass at the scene, police said.
Other evidence was found at the scene of the shooting, but Hoefling did not specify what kind.
Police do not know if the victim or other people involved in the fight had been drinking alcohol at nearby downtown establishments, or if they had been at the downtown Mushroom Mardi Gras festival earlier in the day. No one has been arrested for any involvement in the fight or shooting, Hoefling said.
