Staff Report
The Santa Clara County coroner’s officer confirmed Monday morning that the man a kayaker found dead in Anderson Reservoir east of Morgan Hill on Jan. 10 is Jose Luis Rojas Campusano of Gilroy.
Medical examiners confirmed the 41-year-old Campusano’s identity using dental records. They have still not determined what caused his death. As they wait on the results of additional testing, Campusano’s death certificate lists his cause of death as “pending.”
“Everything’s pointing to suicide at this point, but until (sheriff’s deputies) get the report back from the coroner, they can’t close the case out,” Deputy Terrence Helm said Monday morning.
Helm previously said deputies were “99 percent sure” the body was Campusano’s. They had searched for him at Anderson Lake County Park after finding his gray Cadillac there the day after his disappearance. They combed the woods with dogs and probed the depths of the reservoir with a dive team, but he was not found until nearly four weeks later, floating on the far side of the reservoir.
Campusano disappeared on Dec. 13. He left home at about 11 a.m., telling girlfriend Gloria Garfias, who lived with him, that he was going to visit a friend. He never showed up at his friend’s mechanic shop, however, nor did he go to work at Eagle Ridge Golf Club, where he was expected later that day. Garfias called police that night, knowing it was uncharacteristic of her boyfriend to stay out for very long.
